Summary

No one may restrict or limit the sovereignty of the Nation or arrogate to themselves the sovereign powers that belong to the entire Nation. The Nation and every citizen have the right to resist anyone who uses force against the independence, territorial integrity or constitutional order of the State.

Key Points

  • •No one may restrict or limit the sovereignty of the Nation.
  • •No one may seize for themselves the sovereign powers belonging to the entire Nation.
  • •The Nation and each citizen have the right to resist an encroachment by force.
  • •Three values are protected: independence, territorial integrity and the constitutional order.

Practical Example

In January 1991 unarmed people defended the Seimas and the Vilnius TV tower; that is the kind of resistance to a forceful attack on independence that this article now guarantees as a right.

Exam Tips

Remember that the right to resist belongs to the Nation and to each citizen, and that the encroachment must be by force. Questions often ask which three things are protected: independence, territorial integrity, constitutional order.
