The imperative: requests and instructions

The rules

The imperative asks, advises and instructs: užpildykite (fill in), pasirašykite (sign), palaukite (wait). It is simple to form: take the infinitive, drop -ti and add -k (tu), -kime (mes) or -kite (jūs): rašyti gives rašyk, rašykime, rašykite. At offices and on forms you will mostly meet the -kite form, while signs often use the infinitive instead: Prašome nerūkyti, Stumti. Task 1 of the exam is built on public signs and forms are full of instructions, so recognise these forms at a glance.

Speaking practice

Play

Play as often as you like

  1. —Laba diena. Prašau, užpildykite šią prašymo formą.

  2. —Ar rašyti didžiosiomis raidėmis?

  3. —Taip, rašykite didžiosiomis raidėmis ir nepamirškite pasirašyti.

  4. —Kur pasirašyti?

  5. —Čia, apačioje. Paskui atsisėskite ir palaukite, kol jus pakviesime.

  6. —Ačiū. Pasakykite, prašau, kiek maždaug reikės laukti?

Dabar pasakykite patys — now say it yourself. Nothing is recorded and nothing is graded; the exam's speaking part is a live interview, so this is here to be imitated out loud.
