“A Lithuanian citizen by descent who has lived in Lithuania for not less than the last three years, provided that he has reached the age of not less than 40 prior to the election day and may stand for election as a Member of the Seimas, may stand for election as the President of the Republic. The President of the Republic shall be elected by the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania for a five-year term by universal, equal, and direct suffrage by secret ballot. The same person may not be elected the President of the Republic for more than two consecutive terms.”
This article sets who may be elected President and how. A candidate must be a Lithuanian citizen by descent, must have lived in Lithuania for at least the last three years, and must be at least 40 years old. The President is elected directly by citizens for a five-year term, for no more than two consecutive terms.
Only Lithuanian citizens vote in presidential elections: a foreigner holding a residence permit cannot vote for the President, even though they may vote in municipal council elections.
One of the most frequently tested articles: the President's minimum age (40), term (5 years), term limit (no more than 2 consecutive terms) and residence requirement (3 years). Memorise all four numbers.
